{"id":50,"date":"2012-12-20T06:12:08","date_gmt":"2012-12-20T06:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ongoodauthority.com\/blog\/?p=50"},"modified":"2012-12-20T14:45:25","modified_gmt":"2012-12-20T14:45:25","slug":"preventing-violence-the-mental-health-community-must-step-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ongoodauthority.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/preventing-violence-the-mental-health-community-must-step-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Preventing Violence: The Mental Health Community Must Step Up!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the terrible events at Newtown, CT, there have been many calls for the mental health community to step up to fight this senseless violence.<\/p>\n<p>The question is \u201cHow?\u201d\u00a0 While the links between violence, mental illness and gun control are very complex, is it possible that we can do more? \u00a0Certainly the mental health community knows how to help people deal with trauma, grief and loss, and On Good Authority has produced several programs on these topics.\u00a0 But what do we know about prevention?<\/p>\n<p>Do we know enough about what some researchers have called \u201cPathways to Violence\u201d to be predictive?<\/p>\n<p>Do we know enough about threat assessment, warning behaviors, and risk factors?<\/p>\n<p>What about assessing likely severity and probability of outcome?<\/p>\n<p>Can these behaviors be identified, coded, and utilized in a valid manner?<\/p>\n<p>Is there a \u201cPeople who might be Violent Someday\u201d database, as there is with sex offenders and with people who threaten the President?<\/p>\n<p>Do we report schizophrenics to some as yet unknown place?<\/p>\n<p>Do we report anyone who seems weird?<\/p>\n<p>Do we report people with Asperger\u2019s?<\/p>\n<p>What about our ethical standards regarding confidentiality and duty to warn?<\/p>\n<p>Once a person is identified as a serious risk, then what?<\/p>\n<p>And really, given the demographics of the rarity of these terrible events, and the epidemiology showing that only 4 percent of violence in the United States \u00a0can be attributed to people with mental illness, would new laws about this be overreacting?<\/p>\n<p>You might wish to read the excellent article, \u201cThe Role of Warning Behaviors in Threat\u00a0Assessment: An Exploration and Suggested Typology,\u201d by J.
